Over 17% Of Steam Next Fest Demos Used Generative AI In Some Form
One area of focus for me is Generative AI in general, and since my main beat these days (somehow) is video games, I took a look at how many of the Steam Next Fest demos were making use of Generative AI.
The story is available here on TechRaptor: https://techraptor.net/gaming/news/over-500-steam-next-demos-disclosed-generative-ai-usage.
As I mention in the article, I’m going to be doing some more indepth breakdowns and examination of how Generative AI is being used by these games. My personal line is roughly that any use of it taints the product, but I understand others have different lines, and the information is useful to them and also provides an interesting examination of how this is all being used.
Given the economical, ecological, and societal damages of generative AI, from the insane bubble it’s creating, to absurd water usage and green house gas emissions and beyond with things like deep fakes, I don’t think there are many, if any, good arguments that you can make about using generative ai in video game creation. This is without even getting into my personal feelings regarding things like taking my writing or others pictures into a chip mill to re-serve them in new ways and making a mockery of copyright laws in ways that, inevitably disadvantageous those without significant resources.
I’m trying to avoid this turning into a screed on AI, sometime I’ll get to writing a proper one of those, but it’s important to see what people are doing with it right now. AI boosters aren’t above misleading, lying and exaggerating numbers (remember Cambridge Analytica and other various Meta related scandals?), so seeing the numbers and what people are doing matters, just like the harm it is causing in places like Memphis.
