I’m just back in my home in Hamilton Ontario, as I spent the last month visiting Newfoundland — in particular Meadows around Corner Brook. This was my first time visiting Newfoundland, and I stayed with my dad who moved back there last year.

It’s the first trip I’ve taken like this and part of what I wanted to do was take pictures to remember the event and try my hand at writing different types of things here. So, over the next while I’ll be sharing those pictures and providing some context and history about them that I learnt or researched. Hey look at this cool place and here’s something you might not know about it or why it’s cool. I didn’t get to see everything, but I got to some sights around the western coast of Newfoundland and you can expect to hear about a local restaurant or two, some jaw dropping vistas, local oddities, and more.

Sadly, there won’t be any real moose or caribou as they were all hiding from me, afraid I’d steal their souls with my lens.

Today I’m going to leave you with a few pictures of myself at the Meadows Beach — in particular at the Hunky Dory. Dory’s are an important part of Newfoundland history as they were the traditional fishing boat used there starting in the mid19th century. The version here is the Bay of Islands Dory, which differs from the more common Grand Banks Dory because it wasn’t built to be stacked on a ship, but rather to come up on shore. It is also notable by its bright colours, typically orange with a green trim, because it seems Newfoundland really loves its bright colours.

Of course this is actually just a display one they’ve set up at the beach, and for Meadows they’ve called it the Hunky Dory as mentioned above. Other towns in the area had similar set ups as well.

If you want to read a bit more about Dorys in the Bay of Islands this is a good resource.
